Art Education projects developed and managed by Nigel Meager

Nigel has been involved in numerous art education projects in schools and art galleries in the UK. A number of large projects were devised and managed by Nigel. The most significant of these are:

The Visual Impact Project, (1987 – 1991) funded by Arts Council Wales, Gulbenkian Foundation and others. This project explored how artists could work alongside teachers, on a regular basis, to support and develop the primary school art curriculum. There were many outcomes to VIP, the most significant of which led to the publication of "Teaching Art at Key Stage 1".

The British Art Show 4 (1999) for the South Bank Centre, London. A major series of education support publications and events organised for the contemporary art survey, British Art Show 4, when it visited Cardiff.

Arteducation.co.uk and schoolart (1997 – 2001) for Arteducation.co.uk limited and the NSEAD. The development of the content and systems for this art education portal (including the early developed of www.nsead.org); All of the work was later integrated and incorporated into the current web site of the National Society for Education in Art and Design. There are over 300 of units of work from arteducation.co.uk, many of which were written by Nigel. This is a significant resource of classroom ideas about teaching art for all ages of children.

Opt for Art (1995 –1999) for Engage – the premier organisation in the UK supporting art gallery education. Opt for Art won over £300000 of grant aid, most of which was from Arts Council Wales’ lottery awards. Opt for Art was a project for Key Stage 3 pupils, in particular those in years 8 and 9 (12 – 14 years). The aim was to provide funding and practical support to take these pupils to art galleries throughout Wales. The visits were supported by workshops with artists in galleries or back in school. The aim was to see if positive experiences of visual arts would promote the subject.

Islands of Imagination for Cardiff Arts Support Team (2005) Nigel has acted as a course provider and consultant to Cardiff since 1993. He has delivered many in-service training courses and worked in numerous Cardiff schools. ‘Islands of Imagination’ was a project, which integrated a Head Teacher’s conference with a practical workshop day involving teachers and children from almost all Cardiff’s 120 primary schools. Around 30 artists also took part. The aim was to help integrate the twin concepts of culture and creativity in the arts curriculum and improve classroom strategies to allow children to both take control of meaning in the artwork and understand how cultures are formed.

Nigel Meager continues to work in art education from his base in Panama, as well as working as a consultant, he writes articles and publications, conducts workshops, leads seminars and speaks at conferences. If you would like to contact Nigel:
